The annual Dr. Helen Hays Award

The Helen Hays award is an annual award given to a health care professional who is nominated by chronic pain sufferers and chosen by the board of directors of the Chronic Pain Association of Canada. Dr Helen Hays dedicated her career helping ease the burden of pain. Dr. Hays believed and taught others that “the pain is what the patient says it is.” Whether it is was palliative care, cancer pain or chronic non malignant pain, Dr Hays always put the patient first, fought for the multidisciplinary treatment of chronic pain and taught others to do the same.

At the Canadian Pain Society annual conference in Victoria this past May, we presented the Dr. Helen Hays Award for Excellence in Pain Management to Dr Pam Squire.

This yearly award, along with a check for $1,000.00, goes to person who demonstrates similar ideals, and goes the extra mile to make a difference in the treatment, education and awareness about chronic pain. Dr. Pam Squire, a family physician in North Vancouver with a fellowship in pain medicine, looks after chronic pain patients, teaches at the University of British Columbia, speaks and teaches locally, nationally and internationally and is a great advocate for the multi disciplinary treatment of chronic pain.

We were very proud to present this award to Dr. Squire.
